On Not Answering Questions

September 30, 2007

Here’s a little video from the BBC of an interview with a British politician – the politician (Michael Howard) demonstrates perfectly (well, almost perfectly) how not to answer a question.

This was a topic of conversation during the First Class level class last Thursday night.

Enjoy ^^

Mr Bean Weekend Special

September 29, 2007

OK guys, you don’t need any English for this one. But there is always an important message in every Mr Bean.

The Message is that whatever you want to do – you should NEVER quit. And that means for you, as an English student, you should never quit. Keep going, because just when you think you are not improving or English is impossible – you are so close to becoming a great English speaker!

Enjoy the clip :-)

Weekend News

September 28, 2007

I hope you all had a great Chuseok holiday and have come back feeling fresh and ready to continue your studies in business English :-)

More news on the Airbus and Boeing battle. Above is the BBC news item on the recent order from British Airways. A rather interesting feature on this battle of the two airplane giants. Here is a link to a news article you can read about the order.

Also – Important news for all Songpa students

Please remember that next Thursday (4th October) is a Monday, Wednesday, Friday class NOT a Thursday class. So that means for students in the ECONOMY CLASS on a Monday and Wednesday will have a class on Thursday.

Gangnam Students should check with Kurt next Monday for their class times on Thursday.

Well, that’s it for now – I hope you all have a great weekend and see you all in class soon.

Tuesday News Update

September 18, 2007

Welcome all to another new week. I do hope every thing is going well for you all.

Recently we have been talking about the story of 신정아 in our First Class Level and we discussed the possible role of a ‘publicist’ and how a publicist could help Miss Shin.

To have a look at a very famous publicist take a look at Max Clifford – he is possibly one of the worlds most famous publicists. Click here to see his company’s website.

Take a look at this little video from TED.com. The video is about shaking hands – but you won’t know that until you get to the end ^^ Click Here

I found a great article about doing business presentations over at Squidoo – It gives you some great information on what to do to improve your business presentations. Click here to view it.

Well, that’s it for now. Have a great week and see you all again soon.

Sparkling Korea

September 14, 2007

I am not sure if you have ever seen these adverts – They are the Korean Tourism Ministry’s adverts as shown on CNN and BBC World.

Below is Malaysia’s advert. I am showing you this one because recently Malaysia’s advert was voted the best tourism video in Asia.

So for all you marketing minded people out there – you can decide for yourself which is the best advert :-) – A good little weekend exercise for you :-)

PS. I apologise for the quality of the Korean ad. I have tried, unsuccessfully, to find a better quality one

Wednesday Update

Recently the BBC has been launching a number of ‘podcasts’ on their learn English website and these are really good for those people who do not have a great deal of time to study English outside the class room.

Here is a summary of the best 3 I have found so far.

1. Let’s Talk About English – I have not had time to listen to this one yet, but from the review it covers pretty much all parts of learning English.

2. How To Learn English – I gave you this one last week, but I cannot emphasise enough – it is a fantastic podcast and ONLY 6 minutes long!! No excuse for you busy people (발리 발리병 안이요!! :-)

3. Learn English – This one is for all you students who understand Chinese as it is designed for Chinese students of English – Very interesting ^^

So, there you go – All you need to help you learn English outside of the classroom :-)

Finally, it is ver sad to hear that Anita Roddick, the founder of “The Body Shop” died last Monday. Anita Roddick was an amazing business woman and her legacy is that we can all learn from her business brilliance. Check out this report from the BBC on her life and business strategy.

That;s it for today. I hope you are all having a great week and that you have all received your welcome email – if you have not, tell your teacher and we will have resent out to you.

Real English Interview Questions

Many of people are always asking me what kind of question will be asked in an English interview. The truth is I do not know. Each interviewer has his or her favourite questions and it is difficult to predict what questions they will ask.

But if you are being interviewed for a foreign company, then here are a selection of questions that are highly likely to come up:

Tell me something about yourself
What do you see as your strengths?
Would you say that you have strong leadership abilities?
Tell me something about your skills and abilities
What makes you feel you would be good at ….?
What kind of experience do you have?
Could you explain what you mean by ….?

I want to strongly stress that you must be careful of some Korean websites that give you a list of ‘possible’ interview questions. Many of these sites translate questions you would be asked in Korean by a Korean interviewer. You MUST remember, there is a very big cultural difference between what a Korean interviewer will ask you and what a native English speaker would ask you.

I want to draw your attention to a fantastic website I came across recently – The name of the website is “Squidoo.com” – Basically it is a networking website designed to help people and companies to get their ideas out into the big wide open world. You can create an account (free) and set up a page about you, or anything.

So if you have anything to say – create an account at Squidoo.

Well, that’s it for Monday news. Have a great week and see you all in class :-)

Making the Impossible Possible & Customer Care

September 7, 2007

Here’s an interesting read about the future of space tourism. (Click Here) It just goes to show that whatever YOU might think is impossible, someone else thinks it is possible.

I know I write a lot about Apple, and for those regular readers of this blog who find this a bit boring I apologise. However, I am interested in what makes successful companies successful and I want to share these success tips with you all.

Recently Apple reduced the price on their iPhones by $200.00. This comes 4 months after the launch of the iPhone. Naturally this upset a lot of iPhone customers and there have been a lot of newspaper reports on how unfair this move was.

In an attempt to stop this bad publicity – the CEO of Apple wrote a personal letter on the Apple website to all iPhone customers who paid the full price.

Here is a link to the letter. (Click here)

I think the lesson we can all learn from this situation is that no matter how big your company is, if you make a mistake you should always apologise and make right your mistake.

The Nike Logo and Stuff

September 6, 2007

swooshprog.gif

Greetings everyone and once again thank you for visiting our First Class Business blog. First up take a look at look at this website (HERE) which tells the story of the Nike logo. It’s a fascinating read and one I think all students interested in the history of companies should have a read of.

Secondly, I have mentioned before the amazing blog called “Unconventional Thinking” by a guy called Mark Stevens. His latest ‘post’ is a truly remarkable insight into how companies can begin to destroy their own image by forgetting the number one important asset to their company – namely their customers.

Well, thats it for today. I hope you are all enjoying your classes. Remember we are here for you and here to help you improve your English and your business skills. If there is anything we can do to make your experience with us better, please let us know.
